POLICE OFFICER OF THE YEAR 2010

Nominations Procedure

Deadline: June 11, 2010
Time frame for eligibility: May 31, 2009 and June 11, 2010.

Law enforcement can be rewarding and challenging—as well as frustrating and dangerous—so providing appropriate recognition to deserving officers is very important. As law enforcement leaders, we must reinforce to the public that the vast majority of the police officers who serve us are dedicated professionals working to make our lives better and our communities safer.

To provide such recognition, the International Association of Chiefs of Police and Parade magazine sponsor the Police Officer of the Year Award. This award symbolizes the highest level of achievement among police officers in the United States.

In addition to the top award, ten other officers will be selected for honorable mention. All recipients will be featured in Parade magazine, and the awards will be presented during the 117th Annual IACP Conference in Orlando, FL, on October 23-27, 2010.

Nominations must be postmarked and approved by the chief by Friday, June 11 2010.

ELIGIBILITY:
Nominations may be made for exceptional achievement in any police endeavor, either onduty or off-duty, including cold cases, community policing, criminal investigation, extraordinary valor, forensic science, policing technology, terrorism, and traffic safety. Nominees may come from virtually any area of law enforcement, from sheriffs’ departments to border and park patrols to standard municipal police agencies. The time frame for eligibility extends from actions performed between May 31, 2009 and June 11, 2010. Posthumous nominations are not eligible. Only officers in the United States are eligible. An agency may nominate more than one officer.

Endorsement: Nominations MUST have a signed endorsement from the agency head. The agency head need not be a member of the IACP.

Submissions: There is an application for submissions. Please complete the information as thoroughly as possible. Nominations should include a statement of the specific circumstances involving distinguished police performance. Supplemental material such as departmental citations, letters of commendation, and newspaper clippings will be accepted. No videotapes or CDs, please. A 5"x7" black and white, head and shoulders photo is requested, if available. Submissions will not be returned.
