Targeted Violence/Active Threat
Notifying the Public
Active threat situations can quickly elicit fear, shock, panic, and confusion. As an event unfolds, law enforcement executives must ensure accurate and timely information is dispersed to the public to help quell fear, increase cooperation, and aid in response and recovery efforts. Such emergency communication may include alerts notifying others of the incident, directives for how the public should behave (shelter in place), or status updates. Depending on the content, intended audience, and urgency of the message, the method by which the information is distributed may also differ. Public safety personnel should remain cognizant of how different factors may influence communication, developing plans to ensure the most effective practices are utilized.
