President Yost Zakhary, Parliamentarian James McLaughlin and IACP International Division Director Paul Santiago attended the 29th Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police (ACCP), Conference in Trinidad & Tobago, the week of April 26th. President Zakhary and Parliamentarian McLaughlin participated in a panel discussion on firearms along with Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms (BATF) Assistant Director James McDermond. Firearms trafficking in the Caribbean is a major issue which affects the lives of all the citizens in the region. While the ATF talked about operational and training support to the region, the IACP talked about programs, projects, and products which can be useful in dealing with the ill effects of firearms. United States Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement, Department of State, Ambassador William Brownfield talked about the importance of partnerships such as those the State Department has with the IACP and which the State Department and the IACP have with the ACCP. Professor Lawrence Sherman, Director of the Institute of Criminology of the University of Cambridge presented a study completed just six months ago in Trinidad & Tobago which used evidenced based policing to address vehicle patrolling practices using both test and control groups by precincts. We hope to publish a description of this study in IACP’s The Police Chief Magazine in the future.
