The Law Enforcement Family Support Program Training and Technical Assistance (TTA) program helps agencies establish and enhance family support programs to improve officer safety and wellness. Law enforcement officers are routinely exposed to stressful, demanding situations that challenge them both physically and mentally. An officer’s health and wellness are important, but the lifestyle and culture of policing also affect families. In this program, funded by Motorola Solutions Foundation, law enforcement leaders and stakeholders receive individualized, hands-on TTA from subject matter experts (SMEs) with experience in law enforcement leadership, police psychology, and family support program development.  Agencies in the program use various online and in-person approaches to establish and enhance their Family Wellness Program, including social media pages,  private online communities, wellness apps, Family Day at the Academy, Junior Academy for officers’ children, a paint night for officers and their partners (with the agency providing childcare), or an educational session on wills and estate planning, to name a few. 

Participating agencies will receive travel support for a representative to attend an in-person kick-off meeting at the IACP Officer Safety and Wellness (OSW) Symposium in Anaheim, CA, March 3-5, 2023. During this kick-off event, agencies will meet current and past participants, the SMEs, and the IACP project team. This kick-off will be a working meeting, with SMEs assisting each agency in creating individualized goals for their programs. Following the kick-off meeting, participants should plan to spend 1-2 hours per month with the TTA providers for ongoing training and support.
