New Policy Center Documents Available – Seven Updated Topics!

Blog Post

The goal of the IACP Policy Center is to provide updated guidance on a variety of policy topics of interest to the field of law enforcement. But did you know that we use feedback from the field to select which topics to update? The Policy Center focuses its operations on providing up-to-date documents for the topics that IACP members access the most - many topics are chosen based on interest and demand from the field.

In response to feedback from the IACP membership, newly-updated documents are now available on the following topics!

Body-Worn Cameras

Body-worn cameras can be used for documentation purposes, to resolve administrative and criminal complaints, and as a potential defense resource in cases of civil liability. Read about the pros and cons of implementing a body-worn camera program and considerations about when and where to record.

Crowd Management

Law enforcement plays an important role in protecting an individual’s rights related to peaceful assembly and free speech. However, large crowds have the potential to turn violent, with law enforcement responsible for maintaining the safety of protesters, bystanders, and officers alike. Is your agency prepared to effectively manage a crowd?

Domestic Violence

Newly updated documents on domestic violence have been expanded. In addition to information regarding agency response to domestic violence incidents, they now feature a discussion of domestic violence by police officers, which will replace the stand-alone documents on the topic.

Employee Mental Health

An agency’s employees are its most valuable assets. Learn to invest in your employees by offering mental health services that support them and their families. Agencies can aim to reduce the potentially harmful effects of repeated and traumatic stress by implementing a mental health program, employee assistance programs, peer support programs, and more.

Employee Misconduct

When agencies investigate allegations of employee misconduct in a consistent, transparent, and impartial way, they foster a sense of trust among their employees and in their communities. An effective employee misconduct policy can also mitigate potential civil litigation and protect agencies’ integrity. The updated documents provide examples of how an agency can integrate checks and balances into a policy and shift the focus from reactive punishment to preventative remediation.

Officer-Involved Shootings

An officer-involved shooting can cause heightened media coverage and public scrutiny. The accuracy and professionalism of an officer-involved shooting investigation may impact an agency and its relationship with the community. Prepare your agency to conduct an investigation using the latest best practices.

Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems

While aircraft support has been integral to law enforcement operations for years, recent technological advances have allowed agencies to use an alternative, cost-effective approach: small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS). These lightweight, remotely piloted aircraft have many of the advantages of a traditional aircraft, with decreased operational costs. Learn about the many functions of sUAS, how to adhere to privacy and environmental concerns and regulations, and how to initiate a sUAS program.
