Austin (TX) Police Department
Diversity Equity Inclusion Initiative
In 2022, the Austin (TX) Police Department (APD) hired an Equity and Inclusion Coordinator (EIC) to promote the development of goals and initiatives related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging on a departmental level. This role is embedded within APD but this person also works closely with the City of Austin (COA) Equity Office, the COA Equity Network, and other subject matter experts and stakeholders. The EIC provides training on cultural awareness and inclusivity to various APD units. In September 2024, the EIC provided a learning series for APD Training Academy Instructors on creating and sustaining an inclusive culture. This series focused on cultural awareness, understanding and challenging implicit biases, and strategies for being an inclusive leader. APD also partners with Joyce James Consulting, who provides a 2-day workshop on structural and institutional racism to APD cadets during the first two weeks of their academy class. Since 2022, new professional staff to APD have received a presentation on Austin history and the history of race and policing at APD New Employee Orientation, which occurs monthly. APD has an internal SharePoint dedicated to videos and articles on diversity, equity, and inclusion to promote the professional development of APD staff.
Education on Race and Policing
The Austin (TX) Police Department (APD) provides a 2-day training workshop on structural and institutional racism to APD cadets during the first two weeks of their academy class. Once the second day of the workshop is complete, cadets take a field trip to the Neil Cochran House. This museum has the last slave quarter structure built in Austin, and cadets receive an additional lecture about the history of slavery in Austin, TX.
